Dermatologist Approved, DIY Pandemic-Proof Skin and Hair Tips
With most of the country being nearly two-months deep into quarantine life, it’s safe to assume we’ve all had some time to develop pretty consistent at-home routines and productivity wins. But what does that mean when it comes to our self-care? With nail and hair salons now a thing of the past (#TBT to that warm, foot bath and chair massage), and many doctor’s now adopting telehealth practices, there’s no time like the present to ensure we’re maintaining healthy hair and skin routines, even if it’s only to walk to the fridge and back.
We caught-up with board certified dermatologist Dr. Shari Hicks-Graham, M.D, FAAD, creator of the hair care line LivSo, a hair and scalp treatment line for curly and kinky hair, for hair and skin tips to last you through the pandemic and beyond.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Fight the urge to try and buy every new product while you are home. Instead, opt for a consistent maintenance routine that you can implement daily.
“When you’re at home, the motivation to look your best for social reasons may not be the same so it’s really important that as people stay and work from home, you remain consistent with your hair and skin care routines,” Dr. Hicks-Graham said. [Change] doesn’t happen automatically. You have to consistently do it every single day to see lasting results.”
“I always counsel people to maintain a good routine by cleansing, moisturizing and treating any trouble spots on a daily basis, typically in the morning. The regiment doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy, but you do have to work the plan and do it on a consistent basis.
BE GENTLE
When it comes to our hair and skin, keep it simple. Look for words such as “good for sensitive skin” or “hypo-allergenic treatment,” as these tend to signify less perfumes and fragrances. “Because it’s early springtime, hair and skin may be more dry or sensitive during this season of transition,” Dr. Hicks-Graham said. “If someone is suffering with a skin condition such as acne or oily skin, sometimes the tendency is to go harsh (i.e., scrub, mask or peel) because we want something strong and effective however, [when used too frequently] these can lead to rash, skin burns and contact dermatitis. [For daily use], try products for basic cleansing, then layer in other products as needed for any trouble spots.
BEFORE YOU BUY, TRY DIY
Before you splurge on the latest and greatest Instagram ad product, take a look around your kitchen. From masks to exfoliators, our kitchens are likely stocked with several hair and skin friendly items. Dr. Hicks-Graham recommends a coffee, sugar, natural oil (coconut or almond) mix for an all-natural skin exfoliator perfect for the face, elbows, back of thighs and décolletage (upper chest) areas. Here’s a simple, three-step recipe.
EAT FRESH
Easier said than done when we’re 10 steps away from our kitchen all day however, cleaning up your diet will also clean your skin. Also, don’t under estimate the power of “8 glasses a day.” When it comes to clear skin and healthy hair, strong water intake is key for hydration.
“Anything fresh and whole is good” Dr. Hicks-Graham said. “Good, lean proteins such as eggs, salmon and poultry, contribute to hair growth. Things that have a lot of antioxidants are also very good for skin while helping to promote the reduction of inflammations such as rashes and eczema, which can be caused by stress.”
